Severed Feet Mystery

Surprisingly people lose their feet ....

.... only for them to turn up, washed ashore on beaches around the globe but predominantly the Northwest American coast. 

An early example was of a leg encased in a leather boot that was found on a Vancouver beach in 1887. Another human leg encased in a high boot was found in 1914, on a beach near the mouth of the Dean River near Kimsquit. It was assumed to be the partial remains from a man who had drowned on the river the previous summer.

More recently From Petone Beach, New Zealand, the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Fiji, Riverbanks of the USA, to the Salish Sea Coast of North America (the body of water between Vancouver and Seattle that includes Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia), the feet just appear, usually wearing footwear. 

The first of these feet was found on the 20th August 2007 on Jedediah Island in British Columbia. Over the following year, at least 20 more individual feet were discovered. The British Columbia Coroners Service, even put together a map of where feet washed up, although this version wasn't updated with the later finds:

The fact that they were wearing trainers (sneakers) apparently made them buoyant and helped prevent decomposition and predation by fish ..... DNA found that at least one of the feet's owners was identified as a man who had been reported as missing some months earlier. 

Theories as to how or why these feet had become detached from the bodies swirled on social media, but although criminal activity was obviously the first suspicion in many minds, it has been pointed out by coroners familiar with the cases, that ocean currents, predation, and decomposition could have naturally separated the feet from their owners, as the owners trousers would not offer the protection from these forces, that the footwear afforded the feet, and the ankle joint is relatively weak so would break off as decomposition took place. While the British Columbia Coroners Service also identified eight of the previous 12 feet, as belonging to six individuals. In none of the cases was any criminality or foul play found to be involved.

So we are still left with something of a mystery, it could all be down to sea currents that the feet wash up predominantly in a couple of areas as the prevailing winds around the Salish Sea are West to East, and so floating stuff in this part of the Pacific gets blown to the coast effectively. 

Or it could just be a series of coincidences, with the victims whose feet are washing up, being a mix of accidental drownings, boating accidents with swimmers being hit (and it not being reported), or even suicides after all, the metro area along the shores of the Salish Sea is home to more than 8.7 million people ... so a few dozen drownings per year would be par for the course.

But in an interesting sub story, in Washington State, just south of British Columbia, in late 2025 another puma trainer/sneaker washed up on Port Williams Beach, near Sequim, with a decaying foot inside it. After the King County Medical Examiners Office examined it, tests showed that the foot inside the sneaker was a bears foot!! The police reported that "It is unknown how bear bone and tissue came to be located inside the shoe"
