China's Future Impact

With some campaigners estimating that in just nine years' time, global emissions of greenhouse gases are set to be roughly double the level required to meet the goal of holding the temperature rise to 1.5C, China's rush to 'modernise' its economy since 1975, and its wish to dominate the second half of the current century and beyond, has a price .....

..... not just for its immediate neighbours, who now live under its ever more aggressive political and military threat (the claim to the entire South China Sea is an example of this threat), but also for the urgent fight against global warming.

Post Human Demise

I remember a story a few years ago that said that the last Mammoths survived on Wrangel Island off the Siberian coast.

Mammoths Downsized In Order To Try And Survive
Mammoths Downsized In Order To Try And Survive ....

In order to do this they had downsized somewhat under the ecological pressure of global warming, and a restricted food supply. Until their eventual extinction about 2,000 BC, which was some 6,000 years after the rest of the mammoths of the mainland had died off. Humans probably accounted for their final demise.

Conspiracy Corner

I was in a bar the other day (no surprise there then), when I heard a conspiracy theory that I had not heard before. I will have to paraphrase it a little, as the gentleman spouting it, was a little verbose and prone to losing the point.

The Invasion Fleet Coming Soon .....

Basically it was this. We will be invaded by an alien fleet of highly advanced technology within the next 50 - 100 years, and there is a conspiracy of silence to keep us in the dark about it.

Snowmaggedon (Four Inches Of Snow)

Britain's public transport system is something of a pathetic disgrace.

Scenic Snow Cover In Britain Hides Traffic Chaos

That's all we can conclude after just one or two days of snow brings utter chaos to airports, rail, roads and buses .... again. Its the same every year.

The Persistence

It's beginning to look like global warming in the UK is going to result in wet winters and probably wet summers as well.So as usual for this much rained upon land, something of a lose lose situation.

The Drowned World

Years ago there was a Sci-Fi book called 'The Drowned World' by JG Ballard (recently re-issued I understand), which I read ....

.....written in 1962, it details the world after a catastrophic burst of solar radiation has caused the polar ice-caps to melt and worldwide temperature to soar, leaving the cities of northern Europe and America submerged in beautiful and haunting tropical lagoons.

Sea Of (Political) Troubles

Water water everywhere, and not a drop into the drain  .... like the ancient mariner, the British Government (a term we may only be able to use this year), has found itself drowned by the tidal forces of nature, as the flooding in some parts of the south of England cause it a sea of publicity sorrows.

Now if you read the BBC and Newspapers, all of which a London centric, then the flooding of houses near the Somerset levels, or worse the breaching of the River Thames north of London, is a disaster of biblical proportions and all the Department of Environment, or cost cutting governments fault .... its not, and its not.

Fact: We are having the worse winter rains since no one knows when (when incidentally, last October it was predicted that we faced the coldest winter ever!!), and of course its what used to be described as "an act of God", but which probably is better described as "an act of Man", with some scientists saying that as four of the five wettest winters on record, have occurred since the year 2000, we are in fact now inside "Global Warming".

This has been combined with many many sea storms lashing the coasts, and tides backing the rivers up. So ground water levels are at record highs (many boreholes are under record pressure levels), so that rain water has nowhere to drain to, and is bursting some river banks. It's therefore no wonder that there has been some flooding.

I say 'some flooding', because out of an overpopulated nation of 68 million, with maybe 35 - 40 million dwelling places, until this week, whether its 100 or 1,000 homes that had actually been flooded in recent weeks (with admittedly more under threat as the wet weather continues), its still a tiny proportion of the UK housing stock.

This media sense of the apocalypse arriving was added to this week when the high winds disrupted the rail traffic for a couple of days .....in response the government has kicked off the biggest emergency services response since WWII.

Dawlish Railway - Damaged Again By Storms
Dawlish Railway - Damaged Again By Storms

But despite the hardship all this brings locally (and I am not pretending that its not horrible for those affected - I spent 2.5 hours getting home on Wednesday night), it's still affected only a tiny proportion of the UK's population, with the rest suffering just some travel inconvenience and some fences broken. The reality is that if the government hadn't already spent hundreds of millions on flood defences in the UK since 2007, then at least 1.3 million other properties would have been flooded this winter ... now that would have been apocalyptic.

Dawlish Railway - Damaged In the Past By Storms!
Dawlish Railway - Damaged In the Past By Storms!

By many countries standards (and I am thinking  of Italy for example, where earthquake victims are still waiting for action more than a decade after the events of 1997), this would be hailed as a fantastic result of forward planning and public defence .... so in fact, by many standards this actually a success story .... but you wouldn't know it. We have had much the same weather, but with much worse results in the past

As Harold Macmillan once said, what brings a Government down is 'events dear boy, events' and we have had a lot of those recently.

Good News Bad News

First the 'Good News'. We are not going to have a new 'Ice Age' within the next 1,500 years or so, which is when it was due to have started. The last one ended about 11,500 years ago, and as they cycle through every 12,000 years or so, according to scientists (its all to do with Earths orbital cycles known as 'Milankovitch cycles' - subtle variations in the Earth's orbit around the Sun), we were about due one. So probably we can all be grateful for this bit of information, and granny can stop knitting the Woolly Mammoth jumpers.

Wooly Rhinos - Not In The Neighbourhood Soon
Not In The Neighbourhood Soon

Now for the 'Bad News'. The reason why there isn't going to be a new 'Ice Age' next week, or even next millennium, is that 'Global Warming' is preventing the conditions that triggers the start of the next 'Ice Age' from firing up. This because scientists believe that the atmospheric concentration of CO2 would have to fall below about 240 parts per million (ppm), before the glaciation could begin, and as the levels are currently about 390 ppm, then obviously it won't be happening soon.

Incidentally, before we all started worrying about 'Global Warming', I can remember newspapers discussing how we were overdue for the next 'Ice Age' .... even with the warming up. So unless we get a runaway 'Greenhouse Effect' (like the planet Venus), we will still have another 'Ice Age', its just a matter of when, not if.

Why Are Polar Bears Still Here?

I was watching David Attenborough's excellent "Frozen Planet" and a post programme discussion in which he said that if warming continued unabated the Polar bear would be extinct.

Now on the face of it that makes sense but there are a couple of nagging questions that always bug me about this.

Global Warming takes a backward step?

I have blogged on "Global Warming" for a while ..... basically I accept that temperature changes are occurring, I am just not convinced that its human driven changes, nor that its as clear cut as stated.

Recently as an update on earlier posts, I mentioned that there had actually not been a temperature increase for over a decade, and now comes the latest "prediction" ..... Yes, that's right, its now expected that there won't be a temperature rise for another ten years either, (that's about as far in the future as they can currently predict!).

Well correct me if my maths is wrong, but isn't that twenty continuous years without any temperature rise?

What exactly is this compelling evidence that the world is about to go mad?

When the 'greens' hit upon the human led global warming theory, they based it upon a decade of slightly warmer temperatures (less than a degree worldwide) and after decades of saying we are heading for a new 'Ice Age' (we are in an 'Interglacial' period in epoch terms).

And yet twenty years of stable temperature, which don't support their theory, and threaten their funding, apparently don't prove 'the reverse"

Funny that .....

Some more Chickens just came home

I recently posted "When chickens come home to roost", well a few more just clucked again.

Firstly;

  • Gordon Browns last act as Chancellor was a slight of hand cancelling the lowest rate of tax collection, which pertained to those on the lowest incomes. At the time he 'buried' it amongst his usual recounting and announcing of the same monies over and over again (a hall mark of his chancellorship), and deferred it for a year. Well guess what, yep the year is up, and over thirty labour MP's in marginal seats (and they are trailing 14 points in the polls) signed an early day motion, calling on the new chancellor to cancel the move. Its predicted by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, that with all the changes in the income tax, national insurance and tax credit, about 5.3 million families will lose out overall. Oops!

This government has often claimed that its endless tax hikes were "For hard working families" and to "Protect the environment", which added to their mantra that "Immigration is good for the UK", form the 'holy trinity' of Gordon Browns government policy.

Given that my first point shows that, a lot of low paid and hard working people are going to suffer an income cut this month, and that a high court judge has very publically said that all New Labours social policies have either failed, or done nothing to prevent a social meltdown in the UK, you can assume that Gordon's Gang really don't need the rest of the trinity to be challenged, but no such luck.

Secondly;

  • News was released that there would be a drop in world average temperatures this year, which is not so surprising, after all fluctuations are to be expected, but buried within that news, was the fact that there actually hasn't been a temperature rise since 1998. Now, I have questioned the evidence of human driven global warming before, but I had accepted that there were in fact increases occurring, whatever the agent of those changes. Now however, I am less convinced than ever. There has also been new reports on the sun not being linked to this non change in temperatures.
However my key question is, why are we simply not just coming out of the medieval mini ice age?
After all Chaucer wrote of wine vineyards in Durham and Northern England, and we are not at that temperature level yet. According to Henry Ansgar Kelly in his book "Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine" wine was grown 300 miles north of its current limit in the UK.
So what are we paying all these extra "Green taxes" for, especially as I have already predicted that the world will end in 2050AD?

Thirdly;
  • In a hard hitting report, the claim that immigration has been good for the UK was totally debunked by a House of Lords committee, who reported that 'Record levels of immigration' have had "little, or no impact" on the economic well-being of native Britons. This came on top of an expose that once again the UK citizenship tests were being criminally abused. So the Government is still presiding over a system of open doors immigration into the UK, where the citizenship test is being taken by criminals, false marriages are still taken at registry offices, and its actually costing us money because of the ever increasing welfare drains. Apparently we still don't count the 'dependents' of 'arranged' marriages as immigrants ...... this is just basically a giant fraud perpetrated on the British People by this government.
Finally, in a little irony, I wrote about both Tibet and China, as well as mentioning Zimbabwe in that first chickens blog, and I said that China was a cruel communist state, not cuddly Olympic hosts, and that Bjork had cried out for "Tibet Tibet" in a concert in China. Sadly within a week Tibetans were dying for the freedom of their country.

I also jokingly suggested that the South African electricity crisis might be the final straw for Mugabe's regime in Zimbabwe - and lo and behold, it looks like he has been voted out of office (although getting him out is a bit more problematic).

Nostradamus eat your heart out!

Don't mess with this blog dictators and zealots, I have the power!

Update .... I don't have power ... Mugabe is still in power

Man Made Global Warming Myth??

Global Warming Myths??

Fact: There is Global Warming. No disputing It.

Global Warming Debate
Global Warming Debate

The Myth?: It's caused wholly mainly by human CO2 emissions?

There is currently much argument about the extent of human involvement in the global warming that we are currently experiencing. Arguments for and counter views for it not being caused by humans are being put forward.
